Dr. Carey Downey of Blacktail Health was recently honored with the WWAMI Excellence in Teaching Award, recognizing her skills in teaching, mentorship and community impact.

The award, given annually by the University of Washington School of Medicine, recognized Dr. Downey’s dedication to students and patients in Butte.

“Dr. Downey consistently provides direct and constructive feedback that challenges students to think critically, with the clear intention of helping them develop into effective, thoughtful, and compassionate providers,” said Tammy Cox, executive director of Blacktail Health. “Her approach to teaching is distinguished by both commitment and empathy.”

She completed her Family Medicine residency in Missoula, where she gained more training in reproductive and obstetrical care. At Blacktail Health, she focuses her practice in these areas, along with population health, preventative care and adult medicine.

Dr. Downey said she was honored for the recognition because she loves her work.

“I’m thrilled to be in Butte, where both of my parents grew up, and I look forward to continuing to grow my own skills and those of our students as we serve patients of all ages and stages of life,” she said.

Blacktail Health serves nearly 13,000 patients through clinics in Butte, Anaconda and Dillon. To learn more, visit www.blacktailhealth.org.
